Volumetric Video Player

The first step towards Holograms!

I had worked on developing a prototype video player while partnering with Evercoast to showcase their volumetric capture technology wherein they would record a live person from multiple angles with depth sensor cameras and subsequently produce a point cloud .obj file for every frame. I used this huge dataset to preload all obj files and the respective RGB information using coroutines to regenerate the models in the Unity scene, essentially adapting the Object Pooling method and enable/disable them at 30FPS to create a working volumetric video player.

Below is an example of assigning a point size depending on the distance from the camera to cover the holes in the point cloud mesh better.

Here's another showing the video player in action in a given environment.

We displayed this technology on HTC Vive and the Looking Glass display which is constructed using layered glass with each layer displaying a slice of the 3d model, thus making it looks like it holds a hologram in it.
